If you’ve been wincing through walks, struggling with stairs, or avoiding lying on your side because of a deep ache in your hip then you’re not alone. We see this all the time at VIP Osteopathy, and in many cases, it’s something called trochanteric bursitis.

It’s not just annoying. It can stop you from doing the things you love—and that’s why we take it seriously.

What’s Actually Going On

Trochanteric bursitis happens when the bursa, the small fluid-filled sac on the outside of your hip gets irritated and inflamed. That irritation usually stems from deeper patterns in the way your body moves—or doesn’t.

Here are a few common reasons we see it show up:

  • Repetitive movements—walking, climbing, running, especially on uneven ground

  • Weak or tight muscles—particularly in the glutes, ITB, or lower back

  • Poor movement habits or posture

  • Prolonged pressure—like sitting or sleeping on one side for too long

But here’s the key: the pain in your hip is often a symptom of a bigger picture. That’s why we don’t chase the pain, we go looking for the cause.

What We Do Differently

When you come to VIP Osteopathy, we don’t just zoom in on the sore spot. We take a hollistic approach to assess how your whole body moves, because hips don’t work in isolation.

We aim to help by using hands on osteopathic treatment and specific exercise therapy to:

  • Settle inflammation and ease pain

  • Improve how your hips, pelvis, and spine all move together

  • Strengthen the muscles that keep your hips supported and steady

You’ll also leave with a tailored plan that might include:

  • Stretches and strengthening exercises that suit your body

  • Advice for sleeping positions, walking habits, and work ergonomic setups

  • Supportive steps to take while your body repairs

A Few Things You Can Try Now

  • Lie with a pillow between your knees to take pressure off your hip

  • Stretch gently through your glutes and thighs

  • Avoid long hours of sitting or standing still—keep moving where you can

  • Use heat or ice depending on what feels best for your body

If your hip pain is sticking around, or flaring up more often than it should then it’s worth getting to the bottom of it. At VIP Osteopathy, we’re here to help you feel good now and stay that way long-term.
